The time has arrived. It was finally time for us to travel to Harwich to board our home for the next 16 nights. We got up and had breakfast in the hotel restaurant at 8:00 am. There were people everywhere. However, the breakfast was a buffet so we didn't have to wait for slow service. After breakfast we went back to our room to finish final packing. We were to meet downstairs at 11:00 am to get a taxi to go to Liverpool Street Train Station. At a few minutes before 11:00 am we left our room. All at once the fire alarm sounded. We remembered that there had been a sign at check-in that they would be having a fire alarm at 11:00 am but had forgotten about it. The only problem was that the elevators were shut down during that time. We had to sit and wait for about 5 minutes for them to finish their drill.
Once downstairs we checked out and were on our way. We went outside to get a taxi and there was one sitting there. His taxi looked pretty small but he said he could do the job. We didn't realize that the car didn't have a trunk. We put 2 bags in the front seat next to the driver. We put 2 on top of each other in the back seat with carry-on's stacked on top. The taxi driver just sat there while he watched Terry load all the luggage. He was too busy stuffing his face. He finally got out to help with the last 2 suitcases and then had the nerve to tell us we had too much luggage! I told him I didn't think so. We each had 1 bag and 1 carry-on. Next the trick was for us to get in the taxi. I got in first and the only place to put my feet was on top of the luggage. Terry had to sit facing us in a jumpseat in the back. The train station was supposed to be less than a mile from the hotel. It took forever to get there and he took us to the taxi stand in the back of the train station but it was blocked off. He wanted us to get off there. It was at the top of a steep incline that we would have to maneuver our luggage down. We told him to take us somewhere where we could get into the building easier. He then took us to the front of the station where he said there was a ramp we could use. What he failed to tell us was that the ramp went into McDonalds. Unknowingly we wheeled our stuff into McDonalds and then found a side door to exit which put us into the station.
We were at the station about an hour before our train was scheduled to depart so they didn't have it on the boards yet. We had purchased first class tickets and there was a first class lounge that we went to. It was small and there were not many seats in there but there was 4 together and we sat there waiting until time to board. About 12:10 pm someone came in and told us that our train was there ready for boarding on platform 12. It was close to where we were so off we went. The first class car was the first car. It was easier to get our luggage on because there were fewer steps. However once on board there was no luggage storage. We ended up sitting it in the seats across from us. We were afraid someone would come in there to sit but as it ended up there was only 2 other people in there with us and they had no luggage. Some friends of theirs had taken it ahead for them.
It was a nice ride and we go to see Olympic Park where the Paralympic Games are currently underway. Once to the cruise terminal it was just as I had read. We got off the train and walked right off to drop off our luggage and right into the terminal. It was the easiest check in for a cruise that I have ever experienced. It was around 2:00 when we got there to check in so that may have been one reason. I guess most people had already checked in. They had cookies out for us to enjoy but there were no lines so we passed them up and went straight to our room.
The ship is nice. It is smaller than the other Royal Caribbean ships we have been on. Our room is about the same as the room we had on our first Royal cruise. Of course they never get the bedding right. Our bed had not been separated and the bed seemed to be in a heart shape or maybe round or something strange. We also had ordered egg crates to go on the mattresses because their beds have to be the most uncomfortable beds in the whole world. This had not been done either. Our cabin steward came in and told us it would be fixed by the end of the day.
We called the Rosga's to go get a bite to eat. Terry asked what dining time we had. Ours was 6:00 pm. Theirs was 8:30 pm. This was definitely a mistake. Our travel agent had linked our reservations together and were were to have a table for 4 at 6:00 pm. We went directly to the dining room to get the error straightened out. There were gobs of people down there doing the same thing. They told us to go in this room to sit and they would get to us. The room was packed so we stood in the hall hoping they might take pity on us and take us next. That strategy didn't work. Finally as they helped people, some seats opened up. People in there said they had been waiting and hour and a half. We were some of the last they called. It seems Mary and I are to eat with the Smith's (whoever they are) and the Rosga's are at late seating. They said they didn't have anywhere to put us at 6:00 pm but they could get us something at 8:30 pm. There is no way we can wait that late to eat. We wouldn't budge. They told us they couldn't do anything that night but they would let us know the next day.
After that fiasco we still had not had lunch so we went to the buffet and had a bite. The food was pretty good. It was then time for the Lifeboat drill. We went on down so we could ride the elevators. Once they announce the drill, the elevators don't work. It seems like it took forever for them to do the drill. Once it was over, we went back inside and patiently waited for an elevator. It only took about 30 minutes. After all the walking we did in London and Paris every bone in my body hurts and I didn't think there was any way I could walk 5 flights of stairs back to the room.
After back in our room we had luggage so unpacked everything. We weren't there long until it was time to go to dinner because we wanted to go to the 7:45 pm show. The only option we had for eating was the buffet or room service. We went to the buffet where there were quite a few others there eating. The food was really good. In fact I kind of enjoyed eating there because it was good and quick and we didn't have to drag out eating for 2 hours like we do in the dining room. So if they don't work out our dining, I guess this would be a decent alternative. By the way -- when trying to get the dining straightened out, they had 1500 people out of 2000 people on board that wanted 6:00 pm dining. I guess that is what happens when you get a bunch of old people on board. I think the average age of people on this cruise is 80 so that explains it all.
We went to the show at 7:45 pm. It was a brief show where we met the cruise director. I don't remember his name but he is from Australia. We saw the singers and dancers do a song, the band played and a comedian did a short show. There is a group of 75 hard of hearing people on board. They were sitting in a separate section with a man doing sign language for them. It was interesting to watch.
After the show, we stopped by the casino on the way back to the room. No luck there but there are 15 more nights. It was time for bed. We have set our clocks forward for tomorrow. On Saturday, we will be in LeHavre, France. We are going on a Normandy Tour.
Good night.
