April 4, 2018

Today we arrived in Fremantle which is near Perth. Our tour was from 9:00 until 8:00 but our tour guide brought us back to the ship 45 minutes early because she had an 8:30 airport pickup. I am not really sure how that became our problem but it did.

Our first stop was a prison tour. When we got there we were told that the tour didn’t start until 10:00 so back in the van we went for a quick drive around town and then back to the prison for our tour which lasted a little more than an hour. It was an interesting tour where we got to see the cells, library, chapel, solitary confinement, medical center, and administrative offices. I’m sure there are other areas but it escapes me now. My mind seems to wander as I follow along and don’t always pay attention to what they are saying.

Our next stop was King’s Park in Perth (I think). It was so clean and had amazing views. All of the plants were labeled with the names which made it nice so we would know what we were looking at. Unfortunately we didn’t get to stay to look around more.

Our next stop was an hour or so down the road where we had lunch in Lancelin at a seaside restaurant. I had the seafood basket which was a lot of food but good. I was hungry since it was now 2:00. We were near the huge sand dunes where people were surfing on the dunes as well as riding 4 wheelers. I would have surged on them if we weren’t short on time.

Now we were to drive another 1.5 hours to the Pinnacles which are amazing to see. We walked through some of them and then got in the van where we drove through the rest of the park. I think they are formed by the wind blowing across the sand making the formations. The trees in this area are growing sideways because of the winds.

It was around 5:00 and we needed to head back towards the port. We made a stop at Yanchep and spotted koalas and kangaroos. This was the first kangaroo I had seen over here. Beth had spotted a couple that had been road kill.

We got back to the port around 7:15 and went back to our cabin to rest up. We finally decided to go get a hot dog for dinner because we weren’t in the mood for the dining room. When we got up there they had closed down at 8 so we missed out. It was 8:20. Our options then were the buffet, pizza or the dining room. We opted for pizza.

The show for tonight was the Western Australia Police Pipe Band. I enjoyed it. They also had a young girl singing and a 17 year old Irish Dancer. We went to the 9:30 show and we had no problems getting a seat at the late show so we may try that to see how it goes.

We will have 3 sea days and then we will be in Broome on Sunday.
